Our Instructors
John Hutchins ADI
My name is John Hutchins, and I am the owner of Camber Driving School, before running the driving school I spent many years in the transport and the distribution industry.
Back in the 90’s I ran a courier and logistics company delivering throughout the UK and Europe, after this I went to work in a point-of-sale distribution company. Whilst working within the company I became a warehouse operations manager.
In 2010 I decided to have a change of career and become a driving instructor, over the years I have gained further qualifications within the industry.
In 2016 I qualified as a DVSA accredited fleet trainer, since then I have worked with various companies to insure their employees drive at the required safety standard.
In 2016 I also passed the Diamond special driving test, this is regarded as one of the highest standards of driving levels outside of the emergency services, also within the same year I qualified as a DVSA accredited Diamond examiner. I now work with various councils testing and assessing their taxi drivers to ensure they are at the required standard.
In 2017 I passed my Emergency first aid at work with St Johns ambulance, as a company owner I felt I had a duty of care as I work with the general public on a daily basis.
In 2019 I attended a safeguarding course, as I now work with clients with various disabilities this was an important step forward in my career.
Over the years I have attended numerous CPD and standard check courses to keep up with the latest standards within the industry, this is to ensure I have all the correct knowledge to train clients. This has helped me grow the company to what it is today by training people to become driving instructors.
Martin Brown ADI
After a career in the world of engineering I decided it was time for a change of direction so I began the process of becoming a driving instructor in summer 2021. I approached John at Camber Driving School and he guided and trained me through the entire process. I began teaching learners in December and by June I had completed my DVSA Part 3 test to become a fully qualified ADI.
I already had some experience of instructing as I’ve been teaching people to fly gliders for the past 10 years. I’m sure this helped to develop the calm, patient style that many of my clients tell me they appreciate. Teaching people to drive is very different to teaching them to fly but there are also many similarities in the learning process. Apart from gliding I’ve had some great life experiences along the way including sailing around the world and a couple of expeditions of voluntary work in Borneo with Raleigh International plus several stints working with the Renault / Lotus / Alpine Formula 1 team.
Sally Johnson ADI
My name is Sally and I am the female driving instructor at Camber Driving School. After gaining my licence four years ago, I completed an advanced driving course and having mentored full licence holders to achieve the same, I decided to make a career change and start my instructor training with John. I am relaxed, laid back and patient and this reflects in my teaching style. Outside of teaching my hobbies include horse riding, rugby and I am a keen traveller. I currently teach in the automatic Cupra Born.

Passing my driving test many years ago gave me a real sense of freedom and independence. Growing up in rural Oxfordshire, having a car was essential and opened up so many opportunities for me. In my twenties I joined the Fire Service, where I passed my HGV Licence and Emergency Fire Appliance Driving (EFAD) certification, which meant I could safely drive fire engines for emergency responses.
Now, I work in the Criminal Justice System, supporting both children and adults. This work has taught me a lot about patience, perseverance, and how to help people build confidence and belief in themselves to reach their goals. I’ve also spent several years coaching sports for all ages, where I’ve learned to adapt my approach to suit each person’s unique needs.
As I train to become a driving instructor, I’m excited to help others learn to drive, experience the same sense of freedom that I had, opening up a world of opportunities, and for others to enjoy many years on the road.
